Part three of a four-part series

Post-apocalyptic arts & crafts survival skills workshops, you say!?  That’s right:  Creative-making for the improvisational, post-industrial future (and present).  When the apocalypse comes, these definitely won’t be the first things you’ll need to know… but they’ll be on the list! In this workshop series, learn how to make beautiful objects you’ll actually use out of materials that would otherwise go to waste.

You can make your own notebooks, scrapbooks, leaflets, and fliers out of recycled materials—everything from professional-looking bindings down to quick DIY styles.  Learn three techniques for binding, and discuss strategies for making the most out of your discarded office supplies.  You’ll go home with applicable new skills, an instruction booklet, and a kit of tools to replicate what you’ve learned.

Rachel Schragis is a sculptor, illustrator, and craftsperson based in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn.  She is dedicated to pragmatically sustainable making.  Rachel works as a Teaching Artist with Wingspan Arts and is a graphic identity designer for Build It Green NYC.  Rachel has taught textile- and reuse-based craft workshops at Spacecraft Brooklyn, Trade School, and a variety of youth programs.

Instructions:  To beautify our book covers, bring along any attractive salvaged papers you have around—magazine clippings, wrapping paper, envelopes with pretty patterns inside, etc. Other materials provided (rubber bands, office paper, cardboard, bookbinding thread and needles, Elmer’s glue, and brushes).
